So please don’t run away just yet. I’m being up front here. I know it’s not everyone’s taste, and not quite what you may expect from a link titled “Synchronicity”. I’m going to talk very matter-of-fact-ly about Tarot cards. There’s something quite interesting to be learned, and I’m going to attempt to de-mystify the cards just enough without completely ruining the effect.

A good friend and I once agreed that Tarot is simply a shortcut to meditation, and this is quite accurate. They are after all, only pieces of painted card.

There are many routes to be tried in easing one’s pain, and it’s nice to try them all. A kind of spiritual “experimental archaeology”. A walk in another mans shoes. Medication, talking therapy, CBT, CBD, THC, XTC, straight-jackets, prison, anger etc. Self help bookshops are brimful of people selling something. It tickles me to see Christopher Hitchens alongside Deepak Chopra. We all belong somewhere on the Self Help/ Spirituality / Quantum Physics shelf.

Carl Jung told a story of a patient who had been in therapy for a long time but struggled to make a breakthrough. It wasn’t until a golden beetle flew into the window at an auspicious occasion that the scales fell from her eyes. Tarot cards allow us to confront the randomness of life and the chance of a little sparkle in a story telling environment.

Giving control for one moment to the random scattering of dice allows you to suspend your rational mind. Then you use your imagination to tell the story back to yourself. In the re-telling, your unconscious mind realizes what you knew all along. You are your own best Tarot card reader.

Without getting bogged down, it’s worth researching Jung’s ideas of archetypes. The Major Arcana of the Tarot are essentially archetypes. It’s more colourful and fun than a Briggs-Meyer personality test. Look up the Fool’s Journey and the Hero’s Tale. The pictures and symbolism of the cards allows your intuitive side to come out.

Notice intuitive – I am making no supernatural claims here at all. That is a matter of personal perspective. Life is a stage, and we are merely players on it.

I have a hunch that Tarot cards can be used in a gentle form of therapy setting. In a very up front manner as the article started. Tarot cards should not be used to leverage the grief of humans for financial gain.

We have art therapy, play therapy, massage therapy, music therapy, PantsDrunk. Why not Tarot Therapy?

Leviticus 19:26-31 ESV
“You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not interpret omens or tell fortunes. You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard. You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord. “Do not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, lest the land fall into prostitution and the land become full of depravity. You shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord. …
